I am attracted to places where I can breath and see something in the distance. Sometimes a faraway mountain of a high tower can catch my eye and give me the stimulus to paint. I was attracted to a busy intersection in the Talenti district with a curious uphill view of a curving street.

It is a busy intersection and I was immersed in constant noise while I painted. I was not in a place where many passersby could look over my shoulder.

It was early in the morning but, at some point, I heard the voice of a young girl making a comment behind my back. She moved closer and was visible at my left shoulder.

I heard her say, ‘You are courageous.’

She was probably reacting to my calm in the midst of the roaring traffic. But it may have been the cold weather. Come to think of it, it was a little nippy in the morning.

I stopped painting momentarily and turned to see her face. She was young, maybe about 30. She was smiling and looking at my painting which made me feel good.

I replied, “It’s not so much courage as passion.”
And she continued, ‘Yes. A passion for life. Good for you!’ And she turned and went on her way.
